Australia Day Partial Solar Eclipse.

Australia Day (Monday January 26), will see a partial solar eclipse in Australia, Indonesia, South-East Asia, South Africa and spots in between. You can see a map of the eclipse track here.

For most of Australia, the eclipse is rubbish (just around 1% covered in Melbourne and Canberra, 6% In Adelaide), The best views are from the Northern Territory and an Western Australia. This link will give Australians local times for eclipse start, mid eclipse and eclipse end, as well as important safety information and safe solar projection techniques. NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN, Okay.

Other Southern Hemisphereians can check eclipse times in Universal Time here.

There is one (legal) part of Australia where the eclipse will not only be big but actually annular: the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Australian Indian Ocean Territories. A handful of eclipse chasers has already arrived there: here (scroll down) you can see some of their - sunny - pictures.
