Venus and the Scorpion

Of course, I was out and about, far form any internet connection at the time, and when I came back his email was buried uder a pile of others, so I only just found it to share with you.

The Wedensday Line-Up from New Zealand
Tony Travaglia's beautiful shot of Wednesdays line-up as seen from Otago, New Zealand. He had good weather, lucky beggar. The shot focuses on the Moon, Regulus and Venus. You need to click to embiggen to get some wonderful detail.Shot with a Canon 400mm L series. The detail is quite astounding as the picture is 1/4 of the full frame.

More Images of the Partial Lunar Eclipse
Australians wern't the only ones to enjoy the partial lunar eclipse of June 26, 2010. The delightful image sequence comes from long time correspondent Tony Travaglia of Otago, New Zealand. Tony struggled with perssitent cloud to get these images, and was snapping well into the wee hours. His persistence paid off with a lovely sequence for us to enjoy.He used a Canon 40D with a Rubinar 1000mm mirror lens to take these images.

Aurora Udate (from Monday 5 April)
Image of aurora from Monday's geomagnetic storm taken by Tony Travaglia of Otago, New Zealand (click to embiggen).Just updating the aurora alert from Monday. Most parts of Australia were clouded out, correspondent Wes Black saw nothing from Footscray, Melbourne. Andrew Hudspeth was camping at the Walls of Jerusalem in Tasmania and saw a weak auroral display at 9:00 pm. Tony Travalgila in New Zealand got the best view though.
This was the first proper southern aurora (except for those in Antarctica) in a long time. Things can only get better for southern aurora watchers.

The Fires From Space
The sun in New Zealand, veiled by the some of the Victorian Black Saturday fires (picture, Tony Travaglia, Otago, NZ).It was Sunday afternoon when Mum rang me, asking if our Victorian family members was okay. At the time, I hadn't heard the news, we had been huddling in the house to avoid the effects of the record heatwave, and I assumed she was asking how the heatwave was affecting the Melbourne clan, especially as SurferFamily has no airconditioning. I assured Mum all was okay and went back to the mundanities of washing up.
Then the Bettdeckererschnappender weisle came home, saying that bushfires had it Victoria and it was worse than Ash Wedensday. While BEW hunted out a TV channel, and I hit the online news. The news was worse than we feared. Having lived in Victoria, it was a shock to see places that we knew (we used to go to the ST. Andrews Markets for example) turned to ash. The BEW used to work in the area, it has been a very upsetting time.
The tragedy is all the more poweful as these areas are bushfire vetrans. Almost everyone was prepared for fire, and extra fire fighters were on duty. But no one was prepared for the savagery of the the firestorm (and we are used to bad bush fires). People who had taken all the right precautions, talked of the firstorms blasting into their houses and literally exploding their rooms.
We have been very lucky, none of our friends and relative have lost their lives, and our hearts go out to the families of those who have lost friends and loved ones. One of our family friends did lose their home and all their possession, but they have their lives, and the ability to start over.
Just a reminder, the Red Cross is accepting donations to provide disater relief in Victoria.
And the view from space? Here is the NASA earth observatory image (ironically, this page says "more than 30 people", currently the death toll stands at around 134). The bushfires aren't over yet, and with more heat coming, there is the possibility of worse to come. You can keep track of the south east Australian fires using the images produced by the Modis Rapid Response team.
If that is not enough, Northen Australia is suffering from severe flooding.

Venus, the Moon and the ISS.
Another stunning image from Tony Travaglia of Otago, New Zealand. Here he has captures the International Space Station passing Jupiter, Venus and the Moon. This was taken with his 10-22mm lens at 10mm, about 80 sec exposure ISO 250.Tony wasn't happy with the cloud coming over, but I think it lends dramatic atmosphere to the scene. Some images of Venus below the Scorpion
Another very nice image from Tony Travaglia. This is a fairly old image of Venus under the head of the Scorpion (Antares is near the top left of the image). You will need to click on the inage and enlarge it for best effect. This was taken with an Image Source camera.Tony (an Cynthia earlier) sent me his images a while ago, but I'm only just putting them up now as I'm slack (oh yeah, and family duties keeping me a thousand or so Km away from my computer).
