Southern Skywatch January, 2017 edition is now out!

Evening sky on January 31 looking west as seen from Adelaide at 21:29 ACDST (60 minutes after sunset). Venus and (now dim) Mars form a ltriangle with the crescent Moon. Similar views will be seen throughout Australia at the equivalent local time. (click to embiggen).

The January edition of Southern Skywatch is up (a bit late again, sorry).

This month starts with Venus and Mars lined up in the evening sky. Mars and Venus meet the Moon on the 31st.

Jupiter climbs higher in the morning sky, on the 19th it is not far from the crescent Moon.

Saturn returns to the morning twilight and climbs higher during the month. On the 25th it is close to the crescent Moon.

Mercury, like Saturn returns to the morning twilight and climbs higher during the month. On the 26th it is close to the crescent Moon.

The asteroid Vesta is visible in binoculars in the latter half of the month.
