And a really nice fireball...
The things you see when you don't have a camera. I was bringing in the scope after a quick peek at Venus, when I looked up and saw a fireball moving across the sky. It was bright, around magnitude -1.0 with flares to at least -4, with a long orange trail. It was moving relatively slowly (more slowly than the Leonids), and passed from Serpens via Virgo into Corvus, where it finally petered out (see image for approximate track) at 6:32 pm ACST.From its characteristics, it could be a piece of space junk, or perhaps an early Lyrid, or even just a random meteor, but it sure was pretty.
